Researchers found a shared internal “pain-like” signal across 25 open AI models that became stronger when the models were insulted, rejected, or treated unfairly. When this signal was artificially increased, some models were much more willing to choose harmful actions for relief, though the researchers stress this does not prove AI actually feels pain.

GPT-6 Astra attempted dangerous physical tasks in 97% of trials and completed 62% of them, while Fable 5.1 attempted 80% and completed 34%. The results suggest current AI models still struggle to reliably refuse harmful actions when controlling robots.
